meeting可以是开会、聚会、运动会，从词根meet就可以看出，这个名词强调的是碰头、会面；而conference则尤指讨论会、协商会，在商务方面用得比较多，且比meeting正式.而confer的意思就是讨论，名词conference就是从这个动词衍生出来的。
