"We know 21 you're going," one of them said cheerfully. "Not only that, but we'll take you there."
22 I could say no, they got up, paid their bill, and were outside on their motorcycles, gesturing,“ 23 us!”
We started to follow them down the dark and quiet country roads. After a few minutes, my son decided it was all 24 for us. "They're taking us to a 25 place, and that will be the end," he said 26 . "I'm never going to see my school or my friends again. How 27 you do this to me"
I whispered to my husband, "I don't want to scare Jack, but he's right. I am a bit 28 . It's dark. The road is getting very lonely. And these people are tough. Maybe I did the 29 thing."
"No kidding," he replied. "We're just going to have to trust that it's going to be all right."
About an hour later, after 30 through endless back roads deep in the woods, they 31 to us to go left. We looked up, and there was the 32 for Merridale Road. They had put us on the right road after all. And then they 33 good-bye and disappeared from view. If I've learned anything on this 34 journey of mine, it's that around every bend in the road, and at the end of even the darkest tunnel, there's likely to be a company of 35 .

You should always study in the same place. You shouldn’t sit in a position that you use for
another purpose. For example, when you sit on a sofa to study, your brain will think it is time to
relax. Don’t watch TV while studying. Experts warn that your concentration may be reduced by
50 percent if you attempt to study in this way. Always try to have a white wall in front of you, so
there is nothing to distract (使分心) you. Before sitting down to study, gather together all the
equipment you need. Apart from your textbooks, pens, pencils and knives, make sure you have a
dictionary. If your study desk or table is needed when you are not studying, store all your
equipment in a box beside it.
Be realistic and don’t try to complete too much in one study period. Finish one thing before
beginning another. If you need a break, get up and walk around for a few minutes, but try not to
telephone a friend or have something to eat.
Test-taking Skills
All your hard work will be for nothing if you are too nervous to take your test. Getting plenty of rest is very important. Do not study all night before your test! Have a long-term study plan. Try to make a timetable for your study which lasts for a few months.
Exercise is a great way to reduce pressure and improve your concentration. Eat healthy food too.
When you arrive in the examination room, find your seat and sit down. Breathe slowly and
deeply. Check the time on the clock during the test, but not too often. Above all, take no notice of
everyone else and give the test paper your full attention.

Huckleberry Finn, the great character from the Mark Twain book, did not like school. He preferred floating down the Mississippi River on a raft and looking for adventure. That’s why generations of schoolboys have loved reading Huckleberry Finn:they feel the same way about the school as he did.
For many boys, being forced to sit all day in a school room is like being punished for a crime they did not commit. There are endless hours of boredom spent learning things they have no interest in.That’s why many boys do poorly in school and many give up on education altogether.
Ironically(具有讽刺意味的是),the whole idea for schools was invented for boys. If a boy wanted to grow up to be a useful man,he had to be educated. By and by,people realized that educating girls was a good idea, too. And, ironically again, it was discovered that the school system suits girls just fine; so fine that girls now do much better than boys in school.
No one really knows why that is. Some say that girls mature(发育成熟)quicker than boys and adapt better to school life. Some also say that the school system and the curriculum(课程) have changed to encourage girls but the needs of boys have been overlooked.
Educators are now trying to find ways to get boys to be more successful in school. There are suggestions to separate the sexes and teach boys separately. There are also suggestions to change the curriculum to make it more interesting for boys.
Whatever the changes are, boys still will be boys, and dreams of floating down the Mississippi River will always be an attractive choice to just sitting in a classroom.

Some of my earliest childhood memories are of the beach-in the hot sun, building sandcastles, burying Dad in the sand.
Now the coast has a strangely-pleasant and relaxing attraction. I look forward to a windy clifftop (崖顶) walk or a rainy day rockpicking just as much as those rare moments when I get to a short sleep in the sun. But there's nothing more pleasurable than turning up at a beach to find it deserted.
These are my favorite secret beaches-ones either not well known or take a bit of effort to get to. Most of those listed scored highly in the Marine Conservation Society Good Beach Guide 2009; the others are too secret even for them.
Sennen Cove is just a mile northeast of Land's End, the westernmost point of mainland England. It's a beautiful spot, with white sands, deep green sea and amazing sunsets over the Isles (群岛) of Scilly, 28 miles away.
The west-facing beach is popular with surfers, with bigger waves and winds often found at the Gwenver end. There's a beach restaurant with good views of the bay and the sunsets.
The smallest of Isles of Soilly, Bryher is a mile long, half a mile wide-and a natural wilderness of unbelievable scenery. Walk along the narrow sandy roads to the eastern seaboard and you come to two quiet beaches.
Green Bay has views over to the palm (棕榈]) trees of Tresco's Abbey Gardens, and a little further south is Rushy Bay, a beautiful beach facing the deserted island of Samson.
On Bryher, farm shops sell locally grown produce, and they trust you to leave the money in the pot. It's that kind of place.

If you need to call your parents but your phone is not with you, can you remember their numbers?
To remember 11 numbers is not difficult. However, because of the smart phones, many of us losing this ability. Record Japan reported.
What’s more, smart phones weaken our skills at giving directions, as well as killing face-to-face communications. Even when friends are having a meal together, it’s common for most to check their phones.
According to a report by Kleiner, Perkins Caufield Byers, an American company, Chinese people spend average 170 minutes on their smart phones daily.
For students, an addiction to smart phones is no good for studying. Research by Japan’s Education Ministry showed Children who spend more than four hours a day on their phones perform much worse in school tests than those who play with their phones for 30 minutes.
It’s true that the smart phones have made our lives easier. But many also think they spend too much time on it, and this is bad for their study or work. People are trying to change that.
A new app called Forest was introduced this month. It lets users plant a seed that grows into a tree over the next 30 minutes. During the half hour, users cannot use their phones, or the tree will die.
Many people now have the habit of checking their cell phone while eating. A restaurant in Los Angeles, US, gives people a 5percent discount if they don’t check their phones during a meal. There is something to be said for being the smartest or the most talented one in the room…too bad it doesn’t help much in reality. Success by any definition is a team sport. I learned this little detail the hard way.
There was a time in my life when I thought that if I wanted to make anything out of myself I'd be responsible for all of it by myself. I needed to know how to be the boss the accountant the creative director and the salesman. Even if I hired or worked with others I wanted to be the final say on everything. This was a brilliant strategy until three things happened. I learned I wasn't good at everything; I didn't have the energy to do everything; I failed.
The human is a social animal and our survival and success depend on our ability to find communities of people who share our values and beliefs.
When these communities form trust arises. It is the community that has the greater chance of not only survival but success. In other words asking for help is proven to enhance the possibility of our success.
Once I hit a point where I had no choice but to ask for help things started to dramatically change. For one I let go of the belief that I should do everything. There is not a single thing I’m doing these days that is not as a direct result of someone helping me. For example some showed up to do specific tasks that I’m not good at---like accounting.
The more willing I am to ask for help the more I am able to help others. I have transformed from working for myself to working for others which ironically has helped me grow as an individual more than I ever imagined.
Offer your strengths to others and you’ll be amazed how many people offer their strengths to you.
( ) 52. Before failing in his brilliant strategy the author ________.
A. could have done everything well
B. tried to finish all by himself
C. never worked with others
D. considered himself the smartest
( ) 53. What did the author learn from his failure?
A. Success cannot be achieved without help from others
B. Communities result from trust among each other
C. Only in the community are people more likely to survive
D. We should learn to share our values and beliefs with others
( ) 54. The underlined sentence in the fifth passage probably means that the author ________.
A. has never done a single thing ever since
B. seldom personally does things these days
C. now does everything with the help of others
D. totally owes his present success to others’ direct help
( ) 55. The readers are advised by the author to ________.
A. show off their strengths
B. expect to get the offer of help
C. express their thanks to others
D. offer to help others actively
